Karate is one of the most widely available martial arts in the US, and prices vary more than most parents expect. A small traditional club in a church hall may charge less per month than a single commercial class elsewhere. Here is what to expect and how to compare.
Monthly tuition
At commercial karate schools in most American cities, children’s tuition commonly falls between about $100 and $250 a month. Schools in big cities, schools with unlimited classes and those with large, modern facilities sit at the top of that range. Schools in smaller towns, or plans with one or two classes a week, sit lower. Traditional karate clubs run by volunteers, and programs at YMCAs, park districts and community centers, often charge a fraction of commercial prices, sometimes by the session or term.
Sign-up fees
Many schools charge a one-time registration or sign-up fee when your child joins. Some include the first uniform or a trial month in that price; others waive it during promotions. Ask what it covers.
Belt testing fees
Most karate schools charge for each belt test, commonly somewhere around $30 to $100 for color belts. Schools that test often can add several hundred dollars a year. Black belt tests are usually much more expensive. Some schools include testing in tuition. Our guide to karate belts and kata explains how often children usually test.
Uniform and gear
A karate uniform, or gi, typically costs about $30 to $80, and growing children usually need a new one every year or two. Once children start sparring, they need gear such as gloves, foot pads and a mouthguard, and sometimes headgear and a chest guard, often around $80 to $150 for a set. Many schools require their own branded gear. Our guide to karate gear explains what is needed and when.
Extras
Tournaments, seminars, summer camps, demonstration teams and weapons classes all cost extra, and many schools offer an upgraded program, often called a black belt club, a few months in. Our guide to black belt clubs and upsells explains what to ask.
How to keep costs down
Look at community programs and traditional clubs as well as commercial schools. Ask for month-to-month payments or a short trial before committing to a long contract. Buy uniforms and gear second-hand where the school allows. Ask whether siblings get a discount. And always ask for the total yearly cost in writing before you sign.

Questions parents and students ask
How much is karate per month for a child?
At commercial schools in most US cities, commonly about $100 to $250 a month, depending on the city and how many classes are included. Traditional clubs and community programs can be much cheaper.
Why is karate so expensive?
Commercial dojos pay rent, instructors and insurance, and many run programs with high-quality facilities. Testing fees and gear add to the bill. Volunteer-run clubs avoid many of these costs, which is why they are cheaper.
How much does a karate black belt cost?
Black belt tests at commercial schools often cost far more than color belt tests, sometimes several hundred dollars, and some schools tie black belt to a special program. Ask about it before you sign up.
